Monrovia-November 27, 2025: The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) has begun providing urgent humanitarian assistance to families affected by recent fire outbreaks in Tewor District, Grand Cape Mount County, and several communities in Montserrado County.

A total of 59 families are receiving Cash Transfers to support their immediate recovery needs, along with assorted relief materials including clothing, shower slippers, soap, blankets, and personal hygiene kits.

The Liberian Red Cross intervention is supported by the Swedish Red Cross under its Initial Response Fund.

On October 16, a devastating fire swept through Kru Town in Grand Cape Mount, destroying 22 houses and severely damaging 9 others. Many of the affected families—mostly women and children—have been displaced and are currently seeking temporary shelter with relatives and neighbors.

The Kru Town community, located along the Atlantic coast, is home to approximately 1,347 people, the majority of whom rely on fishing and fishmongering for their livelihoods.

In Montserrado County, the Red Cross continues to receive letters of appeal from families and individuals affected by separate fire incidents. Many have lost everything and are urgently in need of support to recover with dignity.

Speaking on the ongoing response, LNRCS Secretary General/CEO Mr. Gregory T. Blamoh emphasized the importance of timely assistance for affected families.

“Our priority is to ensure that families who lost everything can begin rebuilding their lives with dignity. The Cash Transfer support allows them the flexibility to address their most urgent needs, whether that is food, shelter repair, or replacing essential items,” he said.

Mr. Blamoh further highlighted the impact of the relief materials being distributed:

“Beyond cash support, the relief items we are providing—such as blankets, clothing, slippers, and hygiene kits—offer immediate comfort and protection, especially for women and children who are most vulnerable after such emergencies.

These actions reflect our commitment to stand with communities in their most difficult moments.”

He reaffirmed the Red Cross’s dedication to ongoing support, saying: “We will continue to assess the needs of families affected by fire incidents across Liberia and respond where possible. No community should feel alone after a disaster.”

The Liberia National Red Cross Society remains committed to restoring hope, supporting recovery, and strengthening community resilience across the country.
