Former Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor is grieving the loss of her only son, Charles Philip Taylor. Friends and family say he worked hard to reshape his life and set a strong example through his academic achievements.
Philip passed away earlier this week. The news shocked his mother, his father, former President Charles Ghankay Taylor, and the entire Taylor family. It also left many Liberians in disbelief.
Little public information existed about Philip’s life after earning his master’s degree. Many people only learned of his illness after news of his passing spread.
A Mother’s Investment in Her Son’s Future
Like many parents, Madam Taylor invested heavily in her son’s personal growth. She provided financial support, guidance, and counseling to help him build a better future.
Family associates say she wanted him to become a positive representative of the Taylor family. The family has played a major role in Liberia’s political and social history.
Messages of Condolence from Across Liberia
Since the announcement of Philip’s death, messages of sympathy have poured in. Ordinary citizens, political leaders, and institutions have all expressed their support.
The Congress for Democratic Change, the party under which Madam Taylor served as Vice President, issued a statement of condolence. The party encouraged her to find comfort in her faith during this difficult time.
President Boakai Pays a Personal Visit
On Wednesday, President Joseph Boakai visited Madam Taylor at her Congo Town residence. He went to express his condolences and show national solidarity.
Video footage shared on social media showed Madam Taylor bowing in respect as the President arrived. President Boakai greeted her warmly and offered words of comfort.
An Executive Mansion statement said the President conveyed condolences on behalf of the Government and People of Liberia. He described Philip’s death as a painful loss for the family and the nation.
The President also urged Liberians to show compassion and unity during times of grief.
Academic Achievements and Personal Legacy
Charles Philip Taylor was the son of former President Charles Ghankay Taylor and former Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor.
He earned a Master’s degree in Shipping and Port Administration from the Regional Maritime University in Accra, Ghana. Friends remember him as determined and focused on building a meaningful life.
