The Ministry of Youth and Sports has launched a five-year National Service Program (NSP) aimed at empowering young Liberians through education, skills development, and employment opportunities.
The program, which was officially launched on September 17, 2024, is expected to reach 25,000 young people between 2025 and 2030.
Speaking at a press briefing at MICAT, Acting Deputy Minister for Youth Development, F. Alphonso Y. Belleh II, outlined the various components of the program, which include education support, vocational training, employment opportunities, and a school initiative targeting over 1,000 schools nationwide.
Under the education component, the program will provide resources and training to teachers, benefiting approximately 20,000 students across Liberia. About 150 teachers will be trained to deliver effective lessons during a three-month period.
The skills development component focuses on vocational training for marginalized groups, especially women, targeting 3,000 young people who will receive certificates and stipends of $450 upon completing the program. Training will take place across counties including Grand Bassa, Rivercess, and Montserrado.
In addition, the NSP seeks to provide employment opportunities within government institutions, NGOs, and the private sector. Some participants may even be absorbed into permanent positions following the program.
The Presidential School Initiative aims to supply educational materials such as pencils, erasers, and certificates to students in 1,000 schools across the country.
Meanwhile, the National Science Club, developed in collaboration with UNDP, will target university and college students, offering six-month programs to enhance scientific and technical skills.
The NSP is budgeted at $1 million over five years and will be funded through government allocations and partner contributions. Belleh emphasized the importance of media engagement to ensure transparency and accurate reporting of the program’s outcomes.
“The NSP is designed to provide young Liberians with opportunities for personal development, employment, and national contribution,” Belleh said.
