Whether the National Legislature truly a den of corruption is the question on the lips of most Liberians across all sectors as Representative Musa Hassan Bility is consistently bent on traducing the august body, accusing it of indulging into widespread corruption.
Rep. Bility who has not minced his words in slamming his colleagues for corruption since joining the National Legislature, continues to claim that many lawmakers have been compromised and that the body no longer operates independently.
That the legislature is inherently corrupt was part of his expositions on a local radio station in Grand Gedeh County, saying the Legislature has become overly influenced by the Executive Branch, describing it as a “plaything” of the government.
According to Bility, lawmakers have abandoned their oversight responsibilities due to political and financial compromises, a situation he said has weakened democratic accountability in the country.
In a surprise political declaration, the Nimba County lawmaker said he is not considering running for re-election, citing deep concerns about the current state of legislative integrity.
While addressing residents in Grand Gedeh, Bility also pledged to bring several pieces of yellow equipment to the county to improve road conditions.
He said the machines would be used to rehabilitate major roads and ease transportation challenges faced by residents.
His remarks come amid government plans to import yellow machines as part of a national infrastructure initiative, though Bility did not clarify whether his promise was linked to the government’s program or a separate effort.
Bility’s comments have sparked public debate over legislative independence, corruption, and the role of lawmakers in national development.
As of press time, neither the Legislature nor the Executive Branch had issued an official response to Bility’s allegations.
Bility is one of few lawmakers calling for the audit of the National Legislature, insisting such audits will bring about accountability and transparency.
