LIS Arrests Ghanaians, Ivorians

-For Illegal Entry

Authorities of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) have disclosed the arrest over one hundred and ten (110) Ghanaians and Ivoirians in the country.

The Aliens entered the borders of Liberia through Todee in Montserrado county and other parts of the country.

They were arrested with mining tools. During an investigation conducted with LIS Border Patrol officers they admitted that they came to work for a mining company which name wasn’t mention.

According to LIS release, they came in illegally and because of this, the leadership of the LIS incompliance with ECOWAS protocol and the Alien and Nationality Law of Liberia repatriated them respectively.

The both laws prohibit entering a country without legal document, which according to the laws is intended to authenticate to immigration officers the background of an individual. The arrests of those individuals are predicated upon the fact that the Liberia Immigration Service is involved in community engagement with dwellers along the borders. And it is against said backdrop community dwellers at entry points informed LIS officers about huge numbers of Aliens entering the borders.

This is not the first time for the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) to arrest huge numbers of illegal persons from the borders.

In a related development, the International Organization on Migration (IOM) has installed Migration Information Data Analysis System (Midas) at entry points in Liberia.

According to information gather by this paper, former United Nations Mission in Liberia ‘UNMIL’ was the one supporting this initiative. However, IOM is responsible for the installation of those machines. Accordingly, IOM has the intellectual property right to installed MIDAS across the global.

Areas MIDAS have been installed are: Robert International Airport (RIA), Ganta Border, Spring Field and the headquarters of the Liberia Immigration Service.

LIS headquarters installation is predicated upon the fact that information emanating from these areas will be channel directly to the office of the Commissioner General for perusal and sequence action.

The Migration Information Data Analysis System is tended to capture activities at entry points. It is also a system setup to identify criminals when entering Liberia.

Already thirty officers from the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) have been trained by the IOM in the usage of this equipment.

At the same time, the United States Government has deported thirty (30) Liberian Nationals to their country of origin after being charge and convicted with various crimes.

According to information gathered from the United States Embassy in Monrovia, the deportees were charged with crimes including criminal charge, robbery, burglary, DWI, assault, fraud, aggravated assault, weapon possession, obstruct police, resisting officer, robbery, drug possession, and forgery among others.
