‘GOL Losing SGBGs Fight’

The National Commission of Catholic Justice, Peace and Caritas (NCJPC) says it is deeply trouble that state actors are losing the fight against sexual and gender based violence in Liberia.

According to the group, “One Stop” centers established by National Government to serve as first contact points are reporting more cases, but less number of these cases are being sent to court.

The group made the assertion over the weekend when it releases its third quarter situation report for 2019.

In Margibi County, from January to June 2019, more than forty (40) SGBV cases were reported at the one stop center or health facilities, out of the forty cases, only four of the cases allegedly made it to court.

JPC wondered what is happening to these cases, are they being lost or compromised.

Accordingly, the institution believes that the Liberia National Police must not just be perceived as being neutral, but must be neutral.

“While the JPC condemns all forms of electoral violence but says the failure of the LNP to exhibit neutrality in the violence acts on July 27, 2019 at the close of final campaign in Logan Town, and on August 13, 2019 at the NEC headquarters during final hearing of electoral disputes of alleged electoral fraud,” the group said.

The group in its report also recounted the August 17, 2019 incident in which Telia Urey and her team were stoned, noting that it was absolutely despicable. TNR
