The Independent Civil Society Network of Liberia has unequivocally address and condemn the ‘unfounded, misleading, and malicious’ allegations articulated regarding the recent policy measures taken by the Ministry of Labor, led by Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah.
In a release, the CSO said, “Firstly, let us clarify that the increase in the Alien Work Permit fees from US$1,000 to US$3,000 is a well-considered, patriotic, and strategic policy aimed at promoting local employment and sustainable economic growth.”
According to the CSO, these measures serve to discourage non-essential foreign labor in sectors where Liberians are qualified and capable, thus encouraging the localization of employment opportunities—a core objective of Liberia’s development agenda.
“The suggestion that such an increment is illegal, unjustified, or serves personal interests is baseless and false. The policies reflect the government’s commitment to balancing revenue generation with national development priorities. They are transparent, lawful, and designed to align with Liberia’s long-term economic sovereignty. The assertion that these measures are punitive is simply unfounded. Instead, they are intended to create a more equitable labor market by incentivizing companies to hire Liberians and by strengthening the nation’s labor policies, the group noted.
The group added that the insinuation that the Minister is orchestrating the policy for personal or external interests, especially given his alleged role as a media consultant for the Lebanese business community, is a serious misrepresentation aimed to tarnish the reputation of a dedicated public servant. Such claims are not only unsubstantiated but also serve to undermine the integrity or efforts to build a self-reliant Liberia.
“The Independent Civil Society Network of Liberia condemns these fabrications and calls on the public to rely on accurate, factual information. We remain committed to supporting policies that uphold national sovereignty, economic inclusivity, and the welfare of Liberian workers. We stand alongside Minister Kruah and his team in their efforts to create a more prosperous and equitable Liberia,” the release added.
Among other things, the release under the signature of its Acting Chairman, Mr. Elijah Stephen, noted, “Let us focus on constructive dialogue and factual discourse as we work collectively towards a brighter future for all Liberians.”
