–Sen. Wesseh Discloses
By Jackson C. Clay, Jr.
River Gee County Senator, Conmany Wesseh has disclosed that the Liberian Senate has confirmed dual citizen Liberians to top government positions.
According to Article 28 of the Liberian Constitution among other things prohibits dual citizenship.
Senator Wesseh made the disclosure in open plenary of the Liberian Senate Tuesday, March 5, 2019 during the Senate’s regular session on Capitol Hill.
“I know we have confirmed Liberians with dual citizenship here in this plenary before to top government positions because of their capabilities they bring to the job,” Senator Wesseh said.
The River Gee County Senator comments come in the wake of ongoing debate in the plenary of the Liberian Senate over an Act granting dual citizenship to Liberians and other nationals.
However, Senator Wesseh’s comments was greeted by some stiff resistance coming from his colleagues in session, thus, indicated that his comment has the propensity to bring the Liberian Senate to public ridicule if not already.
Senator Wesseh alleged that up to present, there are Liberians who according to him have more than one citizenship and are serving in top positions within the government and nobody sees anything wrong with it.
The plenary of the Liberian Senate demanded Senator Wesseh to take back such comments before making further comments, something he did reluctantly only for the sake of the debate.
Meanwhile, the plenary of the Liberian Senate is said to be divided over the issue of dual citizenship with most members seem to be in favor of the dual citizenship Act.
Those in favor of the Act are said to be doing so because according to them, the Act would bring to the country some great benefit upon its passage into law.
While, those against the Act said they believe the passage of this Act into law would not be in the best interest of the country and its people and as such; they would ensure that this Act is not passed.
They are Senators, Milton Teajay, Gbleh-Bo Brown, Francis Paye of Sinoe, Maryland and River Cess Counties respectively and others while those in favor of the Act are Senators, Oscar Cooper, Thomas Grupee, Conmany Wesseh of Margibi, Nimba and River Gee Counties respectively among others.
