US-Based Nimba Group To Build Center for Nimba University Students in Liberia

Some US-Based Nimba citizens, under the banner: Nimba Association of Massachusetts (NAM), have secured land to construct a student center near the University of Liberia (UL) Fendell Campus outside the capital Monrovia. The center includes two dormitories: one for males and the other for females, and a library. It will host Nimba students that are attending at UL Fendell Campus.

NAM is an organization of citizens from Nimba County, Liberia, and residing in Massachusetts, USA.

The Association secured the land in Walker Town, Careysburg City, Montserrado County.

Groundbreaking and fundraising program for the project is expected to take place on November 3, 2018. The President of the Association, Mr. Paul D. Gailah and some executives are expected to grace the occasion.

Mr. Gailah explained that the Association decided to build the center as its initial project aimed at addressing the difficulty Nimba students face commuting to and from Fendell Campus.

“Besides the high rentals, some of the students live in central Monrovia and other areas far from Fendell. And some of the students are self-supporting. These conditions are not good for the students and we think this student center is necessary,” Mr. Gailah said.

Mr. Gailah has described the project as historic and called on citizens of Nimba and other Liberians to join in making it a success.

According to him, the project about but Nimba and Liberia at large, adding that the Association needs the contribution of all citizens. “Beneficiaries will contribute to Liberia and the library will also assist other Liberians,” Mr. Gailah maintained.

The Association held a fundraising luncheon for the project in Worcester, Massachusetts, on July 14, 2018, bringing together many personalities, organizations and others that have been embracing the idea by contributing.

Back home, enthusiasm is high among Nimbaians, including the student community, and other stakeholders as anyone that hears about the project embraces it.

The national leadership of the Association, in collaboration with Nimba University Student Association (NUSA) leadership, Nimba Kwadoo leadership and other citizens of the county, has begun mobilization and plans leading to the program and subsequent start the project. The second planning and mobilization meeting was held on Saturday, August 25, 2018, were various committees were set up.

Following its establishment in 2011, NAM was registered in Liberia in 2015.  Among other things, NAM was established to assist Nimbaians, other Liberians in the USA and back home, with its motto: “Serving our community, Nimba & Liberia.
