Capitol Hill-The Representative of district number ten Montserrado County told reporters on Tuesday that speaker Jonathan Fonati Koffa will not resign because he has done nothing wrong.
Hon. Yekeh Kolubah, made the statement at the capitol building following the holding of session by the anti-Koffa lawmakers. On Tuesday, lawmakers seeking the removal of speaker Koffa held a separate session presided over by Thomas Gar, of Margibi and Sekou Konneh of Montserrado county respectively. They were less than 49 lawmakers. According to the rule, to have session, there must be 49 representatives.
Rep. Kolubah described their sitting on Tuesday as illegal.“The sitting of them is illegal. You cannot have the speaker here and come to hold session. So, I should go put 20,000 people together and say that the president does not enjoy the confidence of our people. What’s about the other people,” he said.
“No speaker has been removed. Speaker has been asked to resign. Speaker Koffa will never resign. He will never resign. He has given us the assurance, that is why we have decided to stand by him,” Hon. Kolubah said. He warned; “any attempt for him to resign, his life will be taken.” He did not give details.
Last week about 49 lawmakers signed a resolution that called for his removal stating among others his legal firm-International Law Group provides legal services for several entities, which at times hinder the function of their work. According to one of the lawmakers who signed for his removal, each person was given US$15,000 as an initial payment for his removal. But he later informed the anti-corruption agency of the bribery and the agency has decided to carry out an investigation.
But following his return(Speaker Koffa who was out of the country to Rome, Italy with the president), some of the lawmakers who signed for his removal have rescinded their decision, thus making it difficult for him to be removed.
Rep. Kolubah said the action by the anti-Koffa lawmakers is wrong and also lashed at president Joseph Boakai.
“It is not right. This is what we brought change. The change must set the example. We expect president Boakai that served under madam Sirleaf for 12 years, that worked for 45 years in government to ensure that the government is not dissolved. The change must set the examples. 45 years in government to be able to set the change.”
He said if there was is no quorum by the two sides, there could be a possibility of a government shut down.
“We are reaching to the point where the government will be dissolved, where we will be out of work. That means we can no longer serve the Liberian people. There is an extra law that exist which can call for the dissolution of the government,” he said
“Because if we cannot get quorum, and they cannot get quorum, there will be no business in the country,” he said.
