Sime Darby Lauded As ‘Responsible Company’

-For Cooperating With Lawmakers Over Alleged Torture of Liberian In Video

A Pro Media Advocacy Group, the Strategic Journalist Committee has lauded the management of Sime Darby Plantation for the commitment it shows in cooperating with the ongoing investigation of an alleged torture of a Liberian Citizen perpetuated by Security officers of the Company.

It was recently reported in the Media that Mr. John Davies was allegedly tortured by Security officer of the Sime Darby Plantation when he was caught stealing the Company’s Palm. “We are happy to know that John Davies is alive,” SJC said in a statement.

The Strategic Journalist Committee in its Press Statement said the action by the Company to turn over the Suspected Security Officer for investigation to the Liberian National Police shows the Company’s willingness to abide by the rule of law and the principle of Human Rights.

The Pro-Media Advocacy Group called on the Government of Liberia including the National Legislature to continue the friendly relations with investors as their sole purpose is to create jobs for Liberians.

The group said with the enormous investment made by Sime Darby in the Country, it is difficult for anyone to conclude that the company is involved in any abuse of Human Rights or any form of torture meted against any Liberians.

The Strategic Journalist Committee has regretted the incident, but called on the House of Representatives not to treat the matter with sentiment against the management of the Company, but to consider all facts available by the management who has committed themselves to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

The Pro-Media Group has read in various daily newspapers and Radio Stations that the Management of the Sime Darby Company will be appearing before the Plenary of the House of Representatives on Tuesday the 24th of April to answer to questions while they should not be held in contempt for lying under oath.

Meanwhile, the Media Advocacy Group is calling on Citizens of Bomi, Cape Mount and employees of the Company to desist from the act of stealing the palm.

The Pro-Media Group also called on the Liberia National Police to deploy its men on the plantation to beef up security to curtail the stealing of the palm.
