Several veteran professors of the University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA) have been certificated for outstanding services they rendered to the University. The certification exercise coincided with the 99th Convocation of ULFA held at the University Fendell campus, outside Monrovia.
Remarking at the ceremony, ULFA President, Cllr. Viama J. Blama said his administration is doing everything possible to seek the welfare of the members of ULFA.
Speaking on the Topic, “Carrying the Legacy of ULFA” Cllr. Blama indicated that though ULFA day is to bring members together, his administration decided to recognized professors who according to him have made significant impact at the University of Liberia.
The UL Professor further bragged of the tremendous changes the association is making under his watch, which he categorized, as nine major steps. “It was complicated, but successfully it was achieved” he added.
He named some of the achievements as; the exchanged rate in salary from LRD80 to LRD150; promotion of faculty members; insurance benefits, social security, ULFA office space, loan, among others.
Also speaking at the program was the Managing Director of Ecobank Liberia, George Mensah-Asante who was invited as a special guest speaker.
Mensah-Asante informed members of ULFA that the partnership between the University of Liberia and Ecobank is genuine.
“We are proud to have supported the university to facilitate academic work in addition to sponsorship of various students activities aimed at developing their creative abilities,” he noted.
The Ecobank Manager spoke on the topic, “The role of faculty and staff in enhancing quality education at the University of Liberia”.
He stated that, the faculty is responsible for training and developing the country’s engineers, doctors, politicians, teachers, bankers amongst others.
“The success of Liberia thus depends squarely on your individual and collective efforts. Your position in society is to continue to develop the minds of the future leaders of this country,” he added.
Meanwhile, some of those professors that obtained certificates from ULFA were categorized into several groups to include names of former Presidents of the University of Liberia (UL), names of former President of ULFA, and names of longest serving professors of the University of Liberia.
Among some former presidents of UL were, Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh, Dr. D. Ansu Sonii Sr. Dr. Emmett Dennis, Dr. Patrick L.N. Seyon, while some former Presidents of ULFA were named as, Prof. Dr. Thomas G. Koon, Asst. Prof. D. Karfala Johnson (known as mathematical Ronaldinho), Asst. Prof. Sumo Kupee, instructor Clifford Young among others.
However, some professors top the lists of the longest serving professors of UL among them are, Prof Alhaji G.V. Kromah, Associate Prof. Phillip A. Jayjay Jr., Associate, Prof. T. Debey Sayndee, Prof. Moses, Y. Yarkpawolo, Asst. Prof. Richard Clarke, Asst. Prof. Melina S. Okech, and the only longest serving female from the college of Science & Technology, Prof. Mary E. Metieh, all of whom have spent over 30 to 45yrs of teaching at the University of Liberia.
