MONROVIA – April 8(TNR)-Liberian president George Weah on Wednesday declared a state of emergency as a way to stop the spread of the Corona virus
“The global spread of this virus, represents the greatest threat to the health and wellbeing of the people of Liberia since the Ebola epidemic suffered by our country from 2014 to 2016,” he said in a live nationwide address on state radio.
He said, “It has already arrived in Liberia and confirmed cases are now on the rise. Therefore by the authority granted to me under Articles 85, 86, 87 88 of the Liberian constitution, after due consultations with the speaker of the house of representatives and the president pro-Tempore of the Liberian senate, as required by law, I George Manneh Weah, president of the Republic of Liberia, hereby declare a state of emergency in and throughout the republic of Liberia for the period of three weeks , renewable until the threats to Liberia for the coronavirus no longer exist,” he said.

Liberia has reported three three deaths so far with 14 confirmed cases.
He has directed the speaker to hold a joint meeting to conclude the details of the State of emergency.
“The speaker and the president pro-tempore are to convene the 54thnational legislature a joint secession on tomorrow Thursday the 9th of April 20202 for justification and endorsement for this state of emergency, resolution in accordance with the article 88 of the Liberian constitution.”
President Weah also restricted the movement of people form various counties as well.
“I Further announce under this state of emergency that all 15 counties in the republic of Liberia are hereby quarantined from 11:59pm on Friday 10 20202 until further notice. Movement between counties are strictly prohibited . no person shall be permitted to enter or in any way cross the border of any county into another county, except for Montserrado and Margibi which is treated as a single unit.”
