Mining: Celebrating Women in Mining ─ ArcelorMittal’s Mardea T. Shagbeah Inspires Women to Break Barriers

YEKEPA-Mardea T. Shagbeah, pioneer for women in heavy-duty operations at ArcelorMittal Liberia is making waves in the mining industry and encouraging women to be steadfast and pursue their ambitions in traditionally male-dominated fields. With a remarkable journey from a taxi driver to AML’s first female wheel loader operator at the port, Mardea is a beacon of inspiration for women across Liberia.

Recruited in 2008 as a light-duty driver, Mardea’s determination and skill led her to undergo specialized trainings, ultimately becoming a certified wheel loader operator. Her groundbreaking achievement not only highlights her personal success but also serves as a powerful message to women everywhere that they can excel in any field they choose.

“As a woman, I feel very proud working with ArcelorMittal and working amongst men, and I’m able to put food on the table of my family and send my children to school.”

Mardea’s advocacy for women’s leadership extends beyond her own career. She is actively promoting the importance of women taking on leadership roles within ArcelorMittal and the broader community.

“It’s a very good thing for women to work among men because it is gender equity. What women can do, men can do it, and what men can do, women can also do it too,” she emphasized.

She sees the ongoing Phase II Expansion Project as a significant opportunity for Liberians, particularly women.

“We see Phase Two as an opportunity, especially for us women,” she said. “As a Liberian, I encourage all those working with the Phase II Project to be very vigilant on the job, cooperative, and put yourself in the job so that the Phase II Project will bring pride to all of us.”

Her journey is a testament of resilience and determination, and her message resonates with many aspiring female professionals. As she continues to break barriers and pave the way for future generations, Mardea stands as a symbol of hope and empowerment in Liberia’s expanding mining sector.

With her inspiring story, Mardea is not only changing perceptions about women in the mining industry but also igniting a movement that encourages women to dream big and achieve their goals, regardless of societal expectations.
