-Aimed At Making Monrovia Clean, Green And Safe
The Monrovia City Government has launched what is widely considered a landmark modern waste management project in an effort to make Monrovia Clean, Green and Safe.
The pilot project is targeting four electoral districts of the ten electoral districts found in the bailiwick of the city. The four districts include districts 7, 8, 9 and 10. The Pilot project is expected to run for three months beginning this April.
Speaking at the launch of the program on Saturday, Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson T.Koijee said the pilot project will focus on a modernized approach intended to properly manage waste within the city limits of Monrovia through the collaboration of the accredited Community Base Enterprises (CBEs) and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
He noted that the pilot project in the four electoral districts is expected to target approximately 36,000 out of 85,000 structures enumerated throughout the 10 electoral districts in Monrovia.
He said all skip buckets at road sides and communities will eventually be removed and only be maintained and monitored 24 hours at market places.
The Mayor further said that every house, business in each of the four pilot districts will be required to subscribe and pay for their waste at MCC identified account set up in communities for easy access.
Mayor Koijee further noted that the MCC is working out modalities with its partners to ensure that Monrovia becomes a SMART city like other cities in the sub-region.
Mayor Koijee said as part of his vision to ensure that Monrovia becomes a SMART city, software named and styled “Ducor Software” has also been developed for waste tracking and household locations.
The Lord Mayor also stressed the need for community dwellers to take full ownership of the pilot project which seeks to address waste challenges with in Monrovia and its surrounding areas.
He noted that the Monrovia City Government will work with legislators of the targeted districts, Commissioners of WestPoint, Congo Town and Garwula Townships including community leaders to implement the project.
The Lord Mayor Wants residents of Monrovia take the project as their own and work collectively with the City Government to ensure a clean Monrovia.
Monsterrado County District #7 Representative Solomon George who attended the launching ceremony embraced the idea of a modernize approach to address the waste situation in Monrovia which hosts a district he controls as Lawmaker.
Representative George said only sincerely especially from MCC field workers, CBEs and SMEs as well as community leaders can help foster this initiative.
He wants every inhabitant of Monrovia work collectively with the MCC to ensure that the initiative is sustain with high speed of consistency and accuracy.
Township Commissioners and Community’s Leaders who attended the program also endorsed the initiative and pledged their unwavering support and corporation.
Liberia National Police Inspector General Patrick Sudue pledged the Liberia National Police unwavering support to the project.
IG Sudue said the LNP is collaboration with the Monrovia City Police will continuously ensure that laws and orders are maintained within the City Limit of Monrovia.
