Maritime: Strengthening Maritime Ties Between Liberia and China

…as countries signed Maritime Transport Agreement!

Liberia’s Maritime Commissioner General, Neto Zarzar Lighe, on September 5, 2024 addressed a pivotal bilateral meeting between the Liberia Maritime Authority and the Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China in Beijing.

The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in maritime transport, a vital sector for the socio-economic growth and prosperity of both nations.

Key highlights from the meeting before signing are:

* Maritime Transport Agreement: An Agreement that will enhance freedom of navigation and cooperation on key maritime issues such as vessel treatment, seafarers’ documentation, and crew management.

* Belt & Road Initiative: acknowledgement and appreciation of the impactful infrastructure projects under the Belt & Road Initiative, including ongoing developments in Liberia.

Further collaboration in maritime infrastructure, shipbuilding, and port facilities highlighted.

* Multilateral Cooperation:

Commitment and dedication to working with China on global maritime issues through international organizations, including efforts for shipping decarbonization and maritime security.

*Capacity Building and Training: Expression of gratitude to the President and the people of the People’s Republic of China for the many educational opportunities provided to Liberian students in China and looking forward to expanding Liberia’s maritime training capabilities through partnerships.

Request for cooperation with the Liberia Maritime Training Institute (LMTI)  for officers training programs, maritime security, search & rescue, and surveillance.
