LTA Discovers 79 Illegal Radio Frequencies Operating In Liberia

According to the  Liberia News Agency, the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has discovered 79 illegal frequencies of radio stations across the country.

Speaking at the weekend in Gbarnga, Bong County at the start of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) 55^th anniversary observance, Mr. Kwamata Bettie said the new Radio Regulations of the LTA is meant to correct the wrong operation of frequencies of the past.

According to Bettie, LTA Regulatory Analyst, 15 frequencies are meeting their commitment to government, while another most of the rest are not responding to their obligations.

He said the illegal operation of radio stations is causing serious loss in terms of revenue generation for government.

Bettie told journalists that government through the LTA will began taking corrective actions against those illegal operators of radio stations across the country.

The LTA official added that the Authority plans to begin enforcing regulatory measures against illegal frequency users to enable government and its citizens get benefits.

“We will ensure that radio stations in Liberia meet international standards to provide an improved service for the citizenry,” Bettie said.

“Before becoming a full operator of a frequency of a radio station, one must meet all of the necessary requirements before the frequency is given for operation,” the LTA Analyst disclosed.

Bettie revealed that the LTA has drafted new laws and regulations which set particular stages of frequencies to be given for operation as per request after meeting with government’s commitment.

The LTA Regulatory Analyst revealed that the Standard and Minimum frequencies policy is a roadmap for registered radio stations across the country.

He explained that the Standard Frequency allows one to operate across the country without restriction, while Minimum Frequency is given to an institution to operate within not more than 45 miles coverage.
