Liberian News: Youth & Sports Slams Casual Workers’ Allegations Of Unpaid Salaries
…Says Ministry Do not Owe Them

Monrovia-The Ministry of Youth and Sports has swiftly responded to claims of allegations labelled against the Ministry of owing a group calling themselves ‘Causul Workers of the Ministry.’
The ministry said at no time did the administration of current Minister Jeror Cole Bangalu owe any member of its employees describing the attitude of those proclaimed individuals as tarnishing the image of the ministry and, in particular, the minister.

The ministry said at no time did the administration of current Minister Jeror Cole Bangalu owe any member of its employees describing the attitude of those proclaimed individuals as tarnishing the image of the ministry and, in particular, the minister.
Addressing the concerns Thursday, February 20, 2025 at the compound of the ministry in Paynesville, Youth & Sports Communications Director Oxford Brown noted that the Casual Workers contract ended under the regime of former Minister Zoegar Wilson in December of 2023 adding that a communication sent to the ministry through the Civil Service Agency indicated that the contract of individuals under the Casual Workers ended and recruitment would be based on the ministry’s financial standings.
Mr. Brown narrated that those individuals were placed on the Consultancy Payroll under the immediate past administration, which terminated their contract in December 2023, and as it stands., “We do not owe a single member of said group,” he said.
He explained that based on the Minister’s kind gesture and the economic hardship in the country, Minister Bangalu decided to maintain the employee of the ministry for which two separate letters were sent to both the Ministry of Finance and the Civil Service Agency notifying them of the termination of those worker’s contract and at the same time appealing to include them on the supplementary payroll.
According to him, since March of 2024, both entities have yet to respond to their request despite follow-up being made by the ministry, but he was assured that the process is ongoing.
“The way they are now proceeding is wrong. The first thing is that the ministry doesn’t owe any of those individuals who claiming and protesting. Their contract ended two years ago under the leadership of former Minister Zoegar Wilson”. He added.
Continuing the argument, the Ministry’s Communication Director furthered that the turnover notes given to Minister Bangalu clearly stated that the contract for over 70 workers of the Causal Workers were being terminated and was only in the conscious of the minister to maintain or let them go. “We cannot undo what was in the turnover notes, but what we can do is to make an appeal to the CSA and the Ministry of Finance to include you people on the supplementary payroll, but it will require a lot of processes,“ he added.
Director Oxford Brown, therefore, urged those from the Causal Worker to be patient as the matter is before the CSA and the Ministry of Finance for kind consideration but reemphasizedthat the ministry doesn’t owe any group of such.
Recently, the Ministry of Youth and Sports was battling allegations of financial misconduct and abuses of power as nearly 80 casual workers besieged the grounds of the ministry on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, in protest for seven months of salary arrears.
The workers, primarily from the ministry’s maintenance department, claimed that the ministry owed them US$150 per month with $1,050 per worker outstanding, the total amount of unpaid wages stands at an alarming $84,000.
The aggrieved workers, with nearly sixteen years of dedicated service to the ministry, accused Minister Jeror Cole Bangalu of withholding their salaries while selectively paying other employees secretly.
However, the aggrieved workers noted that they would continue their protest and make the executive branch to listen to their pleading.
Documents in possession of this paper show that the over 70 workers’ contracts were terminated and that an appeal letter was made and sent to both the CSA and the Finance Ministry for consideration ans placing them on the government’s supplementary payroll.
