Monrovia– The Executive Director of United Youth Timathy Kpah has urged community residents to take ownership of WASH facilities provided by partners in their various communities.

Kpah, a WASH Human rights advocate said Wash is a human right. He said such right comes with responsibility that needs to be respected stressing that the residents need not waste their partner’s resources on services that are constructed in the various communities.

Speaking Tuesday, March 18, 2025, on OK FM ahead of the World Water Day celebration, Mr. Kpah said the WASH facilities that have been constructed in the communities are not for the donor nor the Liberian Government, but for community residents.

According to him, their responsibility as civil society is to advocate for those WASH services to be provided by the government and its partners stressing that it is their responsibility to provide the awareness to ensure that community residents take ownership of these facilities.

He said government’s regulatory and enforcement sector of the WASH needs to be proactive by ensuring that these facilities are protected and functional if the donor turns over to the community.

Mr. Kpah further  said  government agencies and ministries that are responsible  for WASH cannot monitor and ensure that these facilities are protected without resources.

He disclosed that the United Youth is working with the Legislature to ensure that lawmakers focus on WASH in the national budget as one of the key components in the budget for national development.

According to him, the WASH Commission needs funding to fully monitor wash activities across the country noting that it can only be achieved through the national budget.

World Water Day, held on 22nd March every year since 1993, is an annual United Nations Observance focusing on the importance of freshwater. World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water.
