Monrovia– Some residents of Monrovia and parts adjacent Tuesday encountered the wrath of University of Liberia-based Students Unification Party (SUP) as militants of the vanguard students’ movement went wild in manner deemed uncharacteristic, beyond its bounds and far more outlandish to its core standings and has the propensity to undermine social cohesion and tarnish its cherished values.
Noted for staging rancorous protests on the campuses of the University of Liberia, disturbing and disrupting learning activities, SUP changed geared and demonstrated a different posture that has left many citizens in the state of shock.
Social media footages showed militants of SUP garbed in their usual kaki attire at the offices of the Liberia Football Association (LFA) in Congo Town, rampaging the courtyard of the football house and demanding that LFA President Mustapha Raji reveals his nationality, meaning his country of origin.
How they derived at the decision of going to the LFA headquarters to demand the nationality of President Raji remains a guess, but the action did not only storm the nation is said to have unmasked the level of the insanity, insecurity and violence hovering the nation.
Serious clashes ensued between the SUP militants and staffers of the LFA who tried to resist them, but to no avail as they made their way through.
Staffers who could not stand the tension were seen escaping their offices while the security officers at the entrance stood idly by.
The students who chanted their usual “mada, mada,” slogan weathered the resistance from the staffers as they managed their way into the fence, while security officers at the main entrance did nothing to stop intruding students from executing their agenda.
Giving reasons for their actions, one of the students said they had gone at the LFA headquarters to officially ask him to “justify his nationality or face the wrath of SUP.”
“The last time we appeared on the Capitol Hill Campus calling on Mustapha Raji, the Nigerian fraudster to justify his nationality, he deliberately refused and denied to do so,” the unnamed student leader said.
He added: “It is this time, the national Vanguard Student Unification Party has come to the office of the LFA, to ask the Mustapha Raji, the Ghanaian fraudster, the man who came from Ghana and Nigeria into this country to take our football association and make business for himself.”
The spokesman quoted Chapter 21, Article 45.2 of the LFA constitution as saying that the president, vice president and all executive committee members must be Liberians, either naturalized or by birth.
Before moving to the LFA headquarters, it was gathered that the SUP militants caused stirs in town by disrupting classes on various campuses and vandalizing properties.
SUP is noted for its wildcat advocacy and protests but extending it to the facility of the LFA and demanding the nationality of the president is dumfounding.
Many wondered SUP has decided to embark on something that does not lie within its powers and the fact that Raji has been in the position several years ago. The LFA is preparing for its election to elect a new president and other officials, and some are not ruling out politics as the shroud behind the action.
