Monrovia– The recent motorcycle restrictions by the Liberia Nation Police has raised concerns both at home and abroad with some citizens stating that it has caused serious challenge to transport and commercial activities in Liberia Capital, Monrovia.

Appearing Tuesday on a talk show (50-50), Liberia Nation Police Inspector General, Gregory Coleman said the laws of Liberia give them (LNP) the right to protect everyone in Liberia and the motorcycles are no exception to the protection of LNP.

The police boss said they are employed to ensure safety for every citizen adding that they took the decision because the areas that are restricted are places that most accidents occurred. “We are not saying do not ride, we only cut a small position for safety,” he said.

According to the police IG, until they can reach the point that people are safe, the restorations of no go zones remain in place.

When asked about allowing the motorcyclists to register as required by the LNP, police IG said they were restricted because it is a requirement by law to register before plying the roads of Liberia.

Additionally, the police IG lauded the cyclists for peacefully conducting themselves during the protest.

He also commended former CDC Chairman MulbahMolu for taking the case of the cyclists to court adding that they are following the court process.

He said if the court rules and says that what they (LNP) are doing to restrict the movement of cyclists in the city center is wrong, he will apologize and remove all the check points.

Speaking on the conduct and training of officers of the Liberia National Police, the IG acknowledged thatsaying that there are some very bad apples among the LNP officers but his administration is not giving up on removing those bad seeds.

He indicated that the LNP is ensuring that those who violate the law will be dealt with in accordance with the laws. He also added that they are seeking all necessary means to have their members trained.

He said currently, the LNP has some partners from the USA who have come to offer traffic management training to some of the officers.

He said as part of the reforms, in the coming months, they will have cameras in parts of the country to monitor traffic and movements in the streets hoping that in the future it covers the entire country.
