Monrovia– The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, and partners, are today March 7, 2025, celebrating International Women’s Day. While IWD is globally observed on March 8 each year, Liberia will commemorate a day earlier as March 8, 2025, falls on a Saturday.

This year’s global theme for International Women’s Day is “Accelerate Action,” while Liberia’s national theme is “Accelerating Action to End GBV and Achieve Gender Equality in Liberia.” The celebration aims to raise awareness and mobilize national stakeholders, partners, and citizens to take collective action in eliminating gender-based violence (GBV) and promoting gender equality. These efforts are crucial to creating transformative change in the lives of women and girls across Liberia.

The 2025 International Women’s Day celebration focuses on galvanizing action and deepening the conversation on gender inequality, reproductive rights, and the persistent violence faced by women and girls. It also highlights the importance of achieving lasting, systemic change to ensure equal rights, protection, and participation of women and girls in all aspects of society.

International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on the progress made toward gender equality, celebrate the achievements of women, and recognize the work still needed to dismantle persistent gender disparities. According to UN Women (2023), women still occupy only 28.2% of management positions worldwide, a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts required to ensure that women’s voices are heard at the highest levels of decision-making.

While Liberia has made significant strides in advancing women’s rights such as ratifying international human rights instruments, adopting affirmative action policies, and improving access to health, education, and political participation, harmful traditional practices, gender-related barriers persist.

The government is committed to intensifying efforts to address violence against women, promote gender equality, and ensure that women have greater representation in leadership and decision-making positions. As part of these efforts, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection calls upon all Liberians, national stakeholders and international partners to accelerate actions to end GBV and create a society where women and girls are empowered, protected, and have equal opportunities to thrive.

On this important occasion, we invite everyone to join us tomorrow in the celebration of International Women’s Day and support our ongoing work toward achieving gender equality and creating a more just and equitable Liberia.

The IWD celebration will begin with a parade from the Ministry of Health commencing at 8am to the EJS Ministerial Complex where an official indoor program will be held. Cllr. Tonieh ATalery-Wiles, Chairperson, Women Human Rights Defenders of Liberia, is expected to serve as keynote speaker, as several other women including Amb. Juli Endee, will be honored for their invaluable services towards the fight against gender based-violence.
