Monrovia– Liberia National Red Cross Society, through Secretary General Gregory Blamoh, has officially launched the study of a disaster law for Liberia in Monrovia.
According to Mr. Blamoh, the Disaster Law Study is crucial in preparing Liberia for the Early Warnings for All Initiative globally.
Speaking during a one-day Inception Meeting with partners on Disaster Law Study organized by the Liberia National Red Cross Society with support from partners, Mr. Blamoh cited that the Study will identify gaps in Liberia’s disaster risk management framework mechanisms.
He said it would pave the way for high-level humanitarian diplomacy efforts to advocate for a comprehensive disaster risk management law in the country.
The LNRCS Chief Executive Officer further said the launch of the Disaster Law Study will enable the participants to provide their insights as it is vital in strengthening Liberia’s preparedness to disaster.
The Secretary General of the Liberia National Red Cross Society also asserted that the law will build the country’s resilience to adequately response to any disaster across the country.
The Disaster Law Study is in line with the launch of the Early Warnings for All in 2022 by the United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Gutteres, with Liberia amongst the few countries that have taken steps to ensure the framework becomes a reality.
In March 2020, the United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Gutteres, announced the Early Warnings for All Initiative, whose goal is to ensure that every person on earth is safeguarded by early warning systems by 2027.
The initiative is a transformative opportunity of the world that highlights the critical need for timely and accurate forecasts and strong early warning systems.
With the four pillars of the initiative, the Liberia National Red Cross Society is leading the pillar on Preparedness and Response Capabilities.
As the rainy season set in April, many communities across the country will again be experience flooding due to many factors.
The flooding of various communities is an incident that residents are usually accustomed to, but Mr. Blamoh indicated that pillar four has a way out.
The four pillars spelled out in the UN Secretary General’s Early Warnings for All include Pillar One and Two -Disaster Knowledge and Detection, Observation, Monitoring, Analysis and Forecasting, while Pillar Three and Four – Warning Dissemination and Information, as well as Preparedness and Response Capabilities.
