Liberian News: LEC To Begin Installation Of Prepaid Meters At Public Institutions In Grand Gedeh

Monrovia-Plans are underway by the Government through the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) and all electricity service providers to begin the installation of prepaid meters at public institutions and the provision to public sector consumers in Grand Gedeh County

MonroviaPlans are underway by the Government through the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) and all electricity service providers to begin the installation of prepaid meters at public institutions and the provision to public sector consumers in Grand Gedeh County.

This information was communicated through a circular signed by the Ministers of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan and Mines and Energy (MME) Minister, Wilmot J.M Paye, to Libenergy in Grand Gedeh County.

LIBEnergy is a contracted electricity service provider for counties in southeastern Liberia including Lower Nimba County, River Gee, Maryland and Grand Gedeh County respectively.

The recent decision by the government through the Ministries of Finance and Development Planning and Mines and Energy is aimed at improving the financial viability of the LEC and prevent the accumulation of arrears for unpaid electricity consumption by public institutions. The communication indicated that public institutions have failed to meet their obligations of settling postpaid electricity bills to LEC, something that has caused huge revenue losses thereby impeding the smooth operations of the corporation.

The government has therefore directed all public sector consumers excluding public health institutions and health facilities to complete conversion to prepaid electricity meters, and make allocations in their institutional budgets for their electricity consumption within one year beginning November 1, 2024.

This action by the government is in line with the acts that created the MFDP, mandating the Minister to formulate, institutionalize and administer economic development, fiscal and tax policies and regulations for the promotion of sound and efficient public financial management.

The MME is also charged with the responsibility to exercise statutory oversight for the energy sector which include LEC, and mandating LEC to distribute energy to the public and generate revenue from said distribution for operations accordingly.
