Liberia News: Women Decry Drug Addiction At WOMSUD Outreach Initiative

Liberia-The issue of drug addiction in the Liberian society remains one of the major issues facing the country.

When people are gathered to talk about things that are affecting the Liberian society, the issue of drugs becomes one of the main talking points.

Over the weekend in the Thinkers Village Community at a civic education initiative organized by the Women Movement for Sustainable Development for women to know and understand their rights as enshrined in the Constitution of Liberia, the group of women shared their stories on those things that have affected them and how they can fight it.

Speaking in an interview at the close of the communities’ initiative, Mother Amelia Benson of the 30-Acre community said, “I am so blessed to be here today because the gathering was so fruitful.”

She said the teaching and enlightenment they received from the Women Movement for Sustainable Development gathering was very helpful.

“For this workshop, it enlightened us that women should not always be at the back, do not allow ourselves to be deterred by what other say about us and we should also help to solve problem” she recounted.

Committing on the issue of drugs abuse by young and old in the Liberian society, she said indicated that with the issue of drugs, they as women from various homes should begin by consoling their children at homes about the danger of drugs and how it is weeping away the next generation of leaders of the society.

She proposed that they as women should organize themselves into groups to carryout outreaches in various communities as means of mitigating the problem of drug addiction.

The Church mother said, if they take into consideration those steps as women, the impact will be greater them just sitting and allowing the future generation to fall prey to drug addiction.

Also speaking at the end of the initiative by organized by the Women Movement group, Madam Benetta L. Vah, a resident of Thinker Village thanked the organizers of the group for teaching them the Liberian Constitution.

She said, “Really, I learnt a lot about the constitution of Liberia. We never knew some things in our lives and through this gathering, we got to know lots of things.”

According to her, there are lots of things that they as women can get involved with to make a change.

“Whenever the community is in need, we the women need to gather ourselves to make sure that we help” she said.

Also speaking about the issue of drugs addiction in the communities, she said, “Even our children who are taking drugs, we need to talk to them so that they can see reason to leave the drugs.

The initiative that group the women from four communities including Gorzhon, Red Hill, Bassa Village, Kpelleh Town, and the 30-Acre communities was aimed at empowering women and young girls to know their rights as provided by the 1986 constitution of Liberia.

Speaking earlier on behalf of the Executive Director of Women Movement for Sustainable Development, Moses Clarke, a consultant of the women’s group highlighted the important roles women play in providing safety for their homes and the society they live in.

Mr. Clarke indicated that they have a huge responsibility that no one should underestimate in the fight of ill in any society.

He informed the group of women that the initiative seeks to recruit nine women who will serve as civic-education-cell from each of the four communities that benefited from the weeks of civic education.

Women Movement for Sustainable Development is a right group that was established in 2008 and got accredited as an organization in 2009 but the just ended initiative accounting to Mr. Clarke, was sponsored by the Destiny Foundation in collaboration with the Thinkers Village Leadership.
