Liberia-The United Nations has instructed all its agencies to assist victims of the recent floods in Liberia. In response, the World Food Program (WFP) has allocated $1.5 million to aid those affected.
Earlier this year, the UN predicted heavy rainfall and subsequent disasters, a prediction which proved accurate, with many Liberians living along river courses and low-lying areas being severely affected.
Despite progress, Liberia’s disaster management institutions are still developing, with limited resources and inadequate infrastructure hindering effective response and preparedness.
At a regular press briefing on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, the Executive Director of the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) Ansu Dulleh, pointed out that the significant challenges Liberia faces in disaster management is primarily due to its infrastructural weaknesses.
However he revealed that the United Nation had come to the aid of those who felt the major impact of the flood.
“The UN has instructed all it agency to provide support to the west African country, something that has promoted the world food program to allocated 1.5M to the national disaster management in helping to address challenges these victims are face with due to flooding,” Mr. Dulleh said
The NDMA boss expressed optimism about the UN’s intervention, noting that the rainy season has left many homeless.
Mr. Dulleh indicated: “When he receives information about the funds, I and my team visited the affected communities to assess the impact it has on the vulnerable populations.”
He said data compiled and validated data by the NDMA has been confirmed by the UN through the WFP, adding “Based on this report, he inform that a WFP team is currently conducting field verification of the affected individuals.”
“The data shows that, a total of 5,200 households, comprising 2,800 individuals, will receive mobile money transfers of USD$45 per household per month for the next four months. This assistance according to him aims to help victims purchase medication and secure better shelter,” Mr. Dulleh revealed.
During the presentation, Marie Sheriff and Mr. Philip Goweg, two flood victims, thanked the NDMA and confirmed that they have begun receiving their USD$45 assistance.
One resident, Musa, posted on social media expressing his support for the UN’s aid but suggested that funds would be better spent on building defense systems to prevent recurring of disasters.
He argued that given the victims money is not bad but the problem will still exist, but wondered if the UN willing to provide the same support next year in the face of another flood situation.
