Liberia News: Senate Staffers Descend On Protempro

-Amid $45, 000 Provision For Vehicles

By Washington Tumay Watson

Liberia-The courtyard of the Capitol Building got tensed Tuesday when staffers of the Senate set up a road block to prevent Pro-temp   Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence and other lawmakers from accessing their offices in demand of their benefits for the special sitting.

Capitol Building security guards were put on alert and lawmakers got unease as tension grew further to an uncontrollable level.

The action, not the first time though in recent months, stemmed from reports that the senators received $45,000 each for vehicles while staffers are yet to receive any benefit from the special session.

Though tried to brave the storm by engaging the angry senate staffers, the Grand Bassa County Senator was resisted, with staffers telling her that they, too, are entitled to their benefits from the special session.

She however consistently and persistently urged the protesters to handle the matter as politely as possible, urging them to use dialoguing in seeking redress rather than resorting to protest.

In effort to pacify protesters. Pro-temp Karnga-Lawrence reminded the protesting staffers of efforts she has been making to address their concerns since her ascendancy to the leadership of the Senate.

She told the staffers that it was unhealthy for them to stage such a protest without seeking an audience with her office as a means of acquiring the rightful information concerning the $45,000 each for senators to purchase their vehicles and their benefit.

Senator Lawrence-Karnga assured the staffers of her commitment to seek their well-being, but urged them to pursue redress through a peaceful process.

The staffers however accepted her request and allowed her to access her office for official work.
