Liberia–In response to the rampant increase of drugs in Liberia and the danger it poses to the youth of the country, Representative Prince A. Toles of District#8 Montserrado County is expected to file a bill proposing capital punishment for would-be drug traffickers who are caught with high amount of drugs.
This move comes despite Liberia being a signatory to the United Nations and other human rights institutions.
Rep. Toles has emphasized the severity of the drug problem in Liberia and believes that tougher measures are necessary to combat it effectively. He argued that despite budgetary allotments to the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA), the situation will not improve unless stricter penalties are imposed on drug traffickers.
“To truly address the drug crisis in Liberia, we need to send a strong message to would-be traffickers that their actions will not be tolerated. No amount of funding or resources for the LDEA will make a difference unless we implement harsher punishments for those who are involved in the illegal drug trade,” Rep. Toles stated.
Rep. Toles further noted that his proposed bill is expected to be placed before plenary when the house of representatives resume its normal sessions next month.
