Monrovia-In a groundbreaking move to transform Liberia’s tourism sector, the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with key institutions, marking a new era of collaboration aimed at enhancing tourism development and related activities across the country.
The ceremony, held in Monrovia, at the conference room of the Ministry of Information cultural Affairs and Tourism brought together representatives from the Liberia Institute of Marketing Association (LIMA), Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS), National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS), and Monrovia City Corporation (MCC). This strategic alliance underscores a shared vision of positioning Liberia as a vibrant, safe, and well-promoted tourist destination.
Speaking at the event, Jerolinmek Mathew Piah, Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism, highlighted the significance of the agreement, starting, “This partnership is a major step toward revitalizing our tourism industry.
Minister Piah said, “By bringing together expertise in marketing, safety, disaster management, urban planning, and statistical research, we are laying the foundation for a sustainable and thriving tourism sector. Our goal is to showcase Liberia’s rich culture, natural beauty, and historical landmarks while ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for visitors.”
The MOU outlines clear roles for each institution to play in fostering a vibrant tourism industry as LNFS and NDMA will focus on public safety, fire prevention, and disaster response measures at key tourist sites. LISGIS emphasized that they will provide data and analytics to support evidence-based tourism policies and investment decisions.
MCC will spearhead beautification, sanitation, and urban management initiatives to enhance the appeal of Monrovia and other tourism hubs.
Liberia’s tourism potential remains largely untapped, but with this agreement, stakeholders are optimistic about the sector’s ability to drive economic growth, create jobs, and improve local livelihoods. The collaboration will also encourage private sector investment, improve tourism infrastructure, and increase awareness of Liberia’s unique cultural heritage.
According to a representative from LIMA, “Tourism is more than just sightseeing; it’s about experiences, business opportunities, and national pride. By strategically marketing Liberia, we can attract more visitors and investors, ultimately strengthening our economy.”
With the MOU now in place, MICAT and its partners will form a technical working group to develop a detailed implementation plan. This will include timelines, key performance indicators, and a roadmap for infrastructure improvements, policy enhancements, and promotional activities.
As Liberia takes this bold step toward tourism transformation, all eyes are on how this partnership will turn plans into action, unlocking the country’s full potential as a premier travel destination.
