The project aims to provide consistent power supply to homes, businesses, and essential services. The handover of the newly constructed distribution network to Jungle Energy Power Incorporated, a local Liberian company responsible for its operations and maintenance, took place during a dedication and handover ceremony over the weekend in Kpein.
RREA Executive Director Samuel Nagbe highlighted that the project will benefit over 9,500 residents in rural towns and villages, including areas around Ganta and Sokopa, as well as those near the Gbedin hydropower plant.
He emphasized that the initiative is a crucial move towards achieving Liberia’s national energy access goals and promoting sustainable development in underserved communities.
Jungle Energy Power’s Human Resource Director, Austin Gray, expressed gratitude to the government for its partnership and commitment to ensuring reliable electricity access for rural dwellers. He assured RREA and the community that the company would address any concerns and challenges to enhance service delivery.
Interim Managing Director of the Liberia Electricity Corporation, Thomas Zailee Gonkerwon, encouraged rural residents to leverage their newfound access to electricity for productive business ventures, underlining the importance of supporting government efforts by paying their electricity bills. The community of Kpein praised the initiative and described the electricity supply as a blessing.
However, residents appealed to Jungle Energy Power for the installation of street lights to enhance safety and boost nighttime commercial activities. The commissioning event drew numerous stakeholders, including officials from the African Development Bank, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, local leaders, and members of the legislature.
The RREA, established in 2010, aims to accelerate the economic transformation of rural Liberia by promoting the development and supply of renewable energy resources and services. The agency manages a Rural Energy Fund to support projects that facilitate modern energy service delivery in the country’s interior.
