Monrovia-a firm and resolute address, Liberia’s Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism, Jerelimick Mathew Piah has reaffirmed the Government of Liberia’s commitment to securing a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

His speech, filled with optimism and national pride, also served as a sharp rebuttal to recent comments made by opposition leader Alexander Cummings, who expressed doubts about Liberia’s chances in the global bid.

Standing before journalists and government officials, Minister Piah began with a reminder that politics much like life itself operates in seasons.

There is a time for everything he said, quoting the Bible, “There is a time for elections, and when that time is over, governance must take priority.” His words underscored the administration’s desire to move beyond political debates and focus on national development.

However, the minister lamented that some politicians continue to engage in empty rhetoric rather than meaningful contributions. He pointed to Liberia’s bid for a seat on the UNSC as a prime example of national progress, an initiative that should unite the country rather than divide it.

The UNSC, he explained, is a vital institution within the United Nations, consisting of 15 members five permanent and ten rotating non-permanent seats. Liberia, with its long-standing commitment to peace and diplomacy, has positioned itself as a candidate for one of these seats. This is an opportunity for Liberia to be part of global decision-making,” Piah emphasized.

But not everyone shares the government’s enthusiasm. Alexander Cummings, leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), recently dismissed Liberia’s bid as unlikely to succeed.

Minister Piah did not hesitate to call out what he described as an unfounded and pessimistic remark. A statement like this should be backed by data,” he asserted. Politics is a science if you say something cannot happen, you must provide reasons why.”

The minister questioned why a leader who once sought to guide Liberia would now make statements that undermine national efforts. Just because the people did not choose you in the last election does not mean you should stand against progress,” he said, subtly referencing Cummings’ poor electoral performance.

Piah urged Liberians to reject negativity and instead rally behind initiatives that uplift the country’s global standing. He described the Security Council bid as a moment of opportunity, a chance to shape global policies while advocating for Africa’s interests on the world stage.

In the end, this is about Liberia, not political parties,” he concluded. We must work together to ensure that Liberia takes its rightful place in the international community.

With Liberia’s bid for the UNSC seat still in motion, the coming months will reveal whether the nation’s diplomatic efforts will bear fruit. But one thing is clear-Minister Piah and the government are not backing down, and they expect all Liberians, regardless of political affiliation to support the journey toward global influence.
