Liberia News: Flooding Exposes Monrovia

…As Several Made Homeless Again

Liberia-Since Friday, September 20, 2024, to present, there has been serious flooding in and around most parts of the City of Monrovia and its environs.

The Mayor and the management of the City Government of Monrovia regret the situation and are seriously concerned about the flooding, especially the flood in the street.

“We are also aware of the threat and forced displacement said flooding poses to thousands of the city’s residents. As a City Government, we aim to work with stakeholders to determine the source of the flooding and put measures in place that would most likely prevent its recurrence,” John C. Siafa, Mayor of the city government said.

He added, “While we do not know and are still conferring with subject matter experts to determine the real reasons for this unprecedented flood across the City of Monrovia and its environs, we are also taking concrete steps to address the situation in the short and long terms.”

The City Mayor added, “As we proceed in addressing the flood issue, we have reached out and are working with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and others in Liberia and abroad including our international development partners.”

“Preliminarily, we know that the City of Monrovia and its environs are not exempt from the effects and impacts of climate change, and we understand that climate change can result in a more intense rainfall that can increase the chances of flooding.”

“Meanwhile, we are also encouraging residents in the City of Monrovia and its environs to desist from throwing trash and waste in drainages, waterways, and sewage lines across the City of Monrovia and its environs,” Mayor Siafa warned.

He said the actual reasons for the flood will be determined and provided in due time when our experts would have completed their inquiry.

He added, “Meanwhile, while we await the conclusion of an official inquiry by the subject matter experts, we will do everything within our authority to ensure that the situation is addressed in the short and long term.”
