Monrovia-AIFO Liberia is pleased to announce the awarding of scholarships to 15 individuals with disabilities (PWDs) as part of its ongoing commitment to enhancing technical and vocational education and training (TVET) access in Liberia. This initiative, which represents the second batch of scholarships under the Coordinated Action on Disability in Liberia (CAD-L) Project, aims to empower PWDs in five counties: Bomi, Bong, Lofa, Montserrado, and Nimba.
The CAD-L Project is a four-year intervention (2021 – 2025) designed to foster exclusivity within development processes and improve the economic and social standing of persons with disabilities in Liberia. This crucial effort is implemented by AIFO in partnership with key organizations such as the National Commission on Disability (NCD), the National Union of Organizations of the Disabled (NUOD), DKT International Liberia, and the Liberia Congressional(LLC), with funding from the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).
Selected scholarship recipients will benefit from a comprehensive package that includes 100% paid tuition, a monthly transportation allowance, materials and tools, and sign language support for students who are hearing impaired The total scholarship value amounts to approximately US$ 29,500.00, addressing the economic barriers that have historically impeded PWDs from pursuing vocational education.
Additionally, provisions were made to adapt partner TVET institutions, such as Nimba University, Bomi County Community College, Liberia Occupational &Industrial College ( LOIC), and Voinjama Women for Peace and Development (VOWPEDE), to create a more inclusive educational environment. Adaptations include the construction of ramps, rails, accessible bathrooms, and disability awareness training for educators.
AIFO Liberia operates as a professional non-profit organization dedicated to enabling opportunities for individuals affected by leprosy, persons with disabilities, women, children, and other vulnerable groups through targeted healthcare, education, and economic empowerment initiatives. AIFO’s overarching goal is to work alongside vulnerable populations worldwide, ensuring health, inclusion, and dignity for all.
