…As Liberia Celebrates World Toilet Day
By Washington Tumay Watson
Liberia-The Chief Executive Officer of the National WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Commission of Liberia, George W.K. Yarngo, has disclosed that some statistics reveal that 35 to 45 percent of Liberia’s population lacks sanitation.
According to him, people who are living in these areas are consistently using the environment to defecate. Speaking on OK FM in celebration of World Toilet Day on November 19, 2024, Mr. Yarngo said the situation is bad for the country stressing that most of the urban communities are facing open defecation conditions more than the rural communities.
He said residents of most of the urban cities with beaches used the beaches to defecate including the rivers. Mr. Yarngo furthered that there is evidence of Liberians engaging in open defecation but indicated that these pieces of evidence need to be converted into numbers where it is affecting people more.
The Chief Executive Officer of the National WASH Commission said with such understanding of the number of areas that are affected, the Commission will be able to address these conditions that are affecting them.
World Toilet Day was established to shed light on the challenges faced by billions worldwide due to inadequate sanitation. The observance underscores the indispensable role of proper toilet facilities in maintaining public and environmental health by preventing the spread of deadly diseases such as cholera
World Toilet Day is important because it raises awareness about the global sanitation crisis and the need for access to clean toilets.
