It is no secret that many institutions that venture in the educational sector come to Liberia on the matrix of providing fees-free education, but the sustainability of these institutions become impossible as few years later, they will change their tones probably because of the economic situation that usually leads to lack of funding to these institutions to continue such program.

This situation has left several school-going children mostly less-fortunate ones to be stranded as their parents and guardians may not afford to pay fees for their children. Honestly, it is impossible to run an institution without collecting fees from parents for the sustainability of the institution.

And that is why when these programs start, they go down the drain and the students mostly the underprivileged ones feel the weight. But today, one institution stands tall making the impossible possible! The Isaac’s Dream of Bear Another’s Burden is gaining momentum since the establishment of the institution in Palm Community-Kpelle Town in the Township of Bardnersville, Monrovia, Liberia. BABMOC has distinguished itself as a fees-free educational system thus, drawing the attention of parents and guardians from three of the nearby communities including Kpelle Town, Johnsonville and Kebah Communities.

Bear Another’s Burdens Ministry of Christ (BABMOC) is a non-for-profit Christian organization whose mission is to provide children the opportunity to attend school in Liberia without requiring any fees. BABMOC is celebrating 15 years of existence as an organization and seven (7) years of providing fees-free elementary education for children whose parents face financial challenges. Today, over 150 underprivileged school-going kids are benefiting from BABMOC’s fees-free education system in three communities. Parents who are financially challenged are taking advantage of the opportunity of sending their children there to acquire sound and quality education. This November is the month of celebration for BABMOC as several activities is taking place on the main campus of the institution. Celebrations kick off since Tuesday, November 5, 2024 and will close on Sunday December 1, 2024. BABMOC is inviting those wanting to identify with, and support its educational mission to be part of these activities. Despite the financial challenge in the country, BABMOC plans on raising fund for at least five areas of financial need which include, the institution’s vocational program, where students who are five years older than their required age for their current grade (for example, 14-year-old in 4th grade are being trained how to weave and sew. Another area of focus is the institution’s land purchase project. BABMOC’s plans to raise US$2,000 to pay off and survey a land for its site-2 located in Careyburg, Montserrado County where it is conducting tutorial classes for beginners to grade 2. BABMOC at the same time, offers WAEC exam pre-session for 3rd and 6th graders at no cost, among others.

The institution is presenting the feasibility of providing hot meal to students as a means of encouraging them to stay in the classroom. Presently, over 150 under-privileged school-going kids are benefiting from the institution’s fees-free educational systems as parents need not to worry about paying fees for their children’s primary education in BABMOC. In other word, BABMOC has step in the gap to assist parents and guardians who cannot afford the cost of acquiring sound and quality education in Liberia. With the little assistance it raised from its few Board Members in the United States, the institution remains focus in ensuring that the little amount touches the lives of every child in acquiring education at no cost. Commenting on the recent success story of BABMOC, the institution’s Founder and Country Director, D. Isaac Mayon in an interview noted, “Oh my God, I can’t describe it. In 2009 it was just me and my grandchildren and few community kids who called me grandpa. In that year I announced that I was being pressed to allow myself to be used as God’s instrument to find help for children in Liberia who find it difficult to go to school because of their parents’ inability to afford the high cost associated with doing so. 15 years later, the evidence of faith is showing as more than 150 children, recruited from three communities in two townships-Barnersville and Johnsonville enrolled, doing so at no charges for registration and tuition fees to their parents, because others care.”While the number of children benefitting is somehow encouraging, BABMOC refuses to feel accomplished, because, “Our dream is about touching lives in every part of Liberia, especially in places where there are no schools,” said Mr. Mayon. Currently BABMOC is celebrating its 15- and 7-years anniversaries. Among the activities, two standouts:1. Our stakeholders’ engagement or interactions forum, which allows participants to brainstorm over how the program can be sustained and expanded to other parts of Liberia: it is scheduled for Thursday, November 28, 2024, at 4:00 PM, at our Site 1 location in Kpelle Town, Barnersville, and2. Our fund-raising rally on Sunday, December 1, 2024; the rally is aimed at raising US$2,000 (Two Thousand United States Dollars) for the purpose of paying off and surveying the parcel of land we are occupying and providing tutorial classes for beginners to 2nd grade.

Please help.Indeed, BABMOC needs the support of national government and other institutions in the educational sector to enable it empower underprivileged kids whose parents cannot afford to send them to school due to the economic situation facing our nation. The writer of this article is a parent at BABMOC who has also taken advantage of this golden opportunity to ensure that the program is sustained and move to a higher height. The name of the institution-Bear Another’s Burdens Ministry of Christ depicts its true meaning as hundreds of less-fortunate kids are benefiting from this kind gesture being provided by BABMOC.
