Legislative Archives To Go Digital

The Frank E. Tolbert Legislative Archives Department of the National Legislature on Thursday, September 06, 2018 launched a fundraising rally at the Rotunda of the Capitol Building. The Archives Department has embarked on a project to rebrand the department by opening a website for the purpose of saving all important Legislative documents.

Speaking during the official launch of the rally, the Director of the Frank E. Tolbert Archives, Jayflay N. Saydee said the project is intended to upgrade the department to international best standard. He disclosed that Liberian Legislature archives department is not up to standard as compared to other neighboring countries. According to him, other countries have graduated from using manual system in term of keeping records and checking for documents.

Saydee explained that the website will be used to post all legislative instruments that have been acted upon by the legislature. He toned that it is about time for Liberia to graduate from using manual system especially in the case of record keeping.

Director Saydee revealed that the department needs over US$43,000 in order to create an effective website for the legislature. He called on members of the Legislature to fully support the project so as to improve the archives department to be accessible to people outside of the country.

Delivering a keynote addressing, the Chief of Office Staff (COS) to Representative Fonati Koffa, Hilarry Koffa commended the organizers of the program for having such a big dream for the Legislature. He pledged his boss fullest support to the implementation of the project from start to end. He presented one thousand United States Dollars US$1000.00 as his office initial contribution toward the project.

Creating the website according to him, will bring another value to the Legislature in term of search for documents. He noted that record sometimes got missing due to the manual record keeping system.

For his part, Nimba County District#8 Representative Larry P. Younquoi embraced the creation of the website for the archives department. He pointed out the constrained people face at time when a particular document is needed. Representative Younquoi said the initiative is welcoming and should also be embraced by the leadership of the both Senate and the House of Representatives.

The Nimba County lawmaker paid US$100.00 as his initial contribution toward the project.
