Ex-interim president dies at 76

MONROVIA – The New Republic has received news from family sources of Dr. Amos Claudius,  former interim president of Liberia that he died late Wednesday in the United States of America at the age of 76. He was head for the Interim Government of National Unity. He underwent brain surgeries prior to his death.

Dr. Sawyer (born 15 June 1945) to Abel and Sarah Sawyer. The Sawyers were a prominent family in Sinoe County, with free African-American ancestors who came as colonists to what  is known as Maryland in Africa.  But other reports  said that he came   from Sierra Leone

He served as interim president of Liberia from 22 November 1990 to 7 March 1994. He was voted in by 35 leaders representing seven political parties and eleven interest groups at a conference held in The Gambia.

According to records, Sawyer graduated from Liberia College, (referred to now as the University of Liberia).

One of the areas he can be remembered is his involvement into the establishment of the Movement for Justice in Africa (MOJA) and in 1983 founded the Liberian People’s Party. He was a political scholar.

Family sources said derails of funeral armaments will be disclosed later.
