Liberia-Sinoe County District #1 Representative Thomas Quioh has called on the Ministry of Education to enshrine multilingual education into national curriculum, accentuating that it will break barriers posed to pupils.
Such programme, he said, is essential for personal empowerment and also vital for global engagement.
Rep. Quioh highlighted the significant challenges Liberia faces in the education sector, particularly the barriers posed by language, noting that multilingual education, recognized by UNESCO, is a key tool in overcoming illiteracy and enhancing academic performance in subjects such as mathematics and science.
The Sinoe County lawmaker called for stronger teacher training programs in multilingual instruction to ensure the successful implementation of the initiatives.
He spoke recently at program making the celebration of the 57th International Literacy Day held in Congo Town.
At the same time, Assistant Minister for Teacher Education at the Ministry of Education Clifford
Konah, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to advancing education through multilingual programs, and also stressed that multilingual education not only enhances learning but plays a crucial role in preserving Liberia’s rich cultural heritage.
The Assistant Minister acknowledged the progress made in the education sector and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with development partners to further strengthen the system.
The event focused on the critical role literacy plays as a fundamental human right, essential for personal empowerment, and vital for global engagement.
With the theme “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace”, it also honored individuals who have made significant contributions to Liberia’s educational development, including Madam Hawah Goll-Kotchi, Madam Mildred Dean, and
Mr. Paye L. Nuhann, in recognition of their relentless efforts in combating illiteracy.
