CENTAL Launches Project To Enhance Political Governance

MONROVIA-The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) has officially launched its new initiative, “Strengthening Political Governance and Accountability in Liberia,” at a ceremony held at the Kakata City Hall on November 21, 2024.

The launch featured notable figures such as the County Superintendent Representative, the Civil Society Organization (CSO) Coordinator, Clan Chiefs, and representatives from the police force, underscoring the collaborative effort required to achieve the project’s aims.

The event drew a diverse group of stakeholders, including government officials, community leaders, youth and women’s groups, and civil society actors, all uniting to bolster the framework of governance and accountability in the country.

During his keynote address, CENTAL’s Executive Director, Anderson Miamen, emphasized the importance of transparency in government actions and the need for active citizen participation in decision-making processes. “To strengthen governance and accountability in Liberia, we must ensure that government actions are transparent and that citizens are meaningfully involved in the decision-making processes that affect their lives,” Miamen stated.

He stressed that it is crucial to monitor governmental activities to safeguard against corruption and highlighted the need for adherence to laws while educating citizens about their rights.

Project Coordinator Torwon F. Gensee also underscored the community’s role in the initiative, urging citizens to take ownership of the project. “This is not the consortium’s project; it is the people’s project,” Gensee emphasized, highlighting the importance of grassroots involvement in promoting effective governance.

This ambitious project is generously funded by the Embassy of Ireland and will be implemented across three counties: Margibi, Bong, and Grand Bassa. The initiative involves a collaboration of three key civil society organizations—CENTAL, NAYMOTE-Liberia, and the Center for Democratic Governance (CDG)—who will work together to promote transparency, engage citizens, and hold government institutions accountable.

The launch event provided an opportunity for attendees to discuss strategies and share insights on enhancing political governance in Liberia. The inclusive nature of the gathering aimed to build solidarity among various stakeholders, fostering a collective commitment to the ideals of transparency and accountability.

As Liberia continues to navigate its political landscape, initiatives such as “Strengthening Political Governance and Accountability in Liberia” represent vital steps toward nurturing a robust democracy and enhancing public trust in government institutions.

For further information on this initiative and to engage with CENTAL’s efforts, community members are encouraged to reach out to their local representatives or visit CENTAL’s official channels.
