Monrovia- December 12, 2025: The South-Eastern Alliance of Liberia (SEAL) has extended commendations to the House of Representatives for its recent approval of fourteen (14) additional seats to the National Legislature, describing the move as a significant step toward strengthening democratic representation in Liberia. SEAL is now appealing to the Liberian Senate to concur with the decision.

The approval was made during the 16th Day Sitting of the 3rd Quarter of the 2nd Session, where lawmakers endorsed the report of the Joint Committee on Elections & Inauguration, Judiciary, and Good Governance & Government Reform. The committee recommended the creation of the new seats ahead of the 2029 General and Presidential Elections.

Following extensive debate, Hon. Foday Fahnbulleh moved for endorsement of the report along with a recommendation for the Speaker of the House to establish a specialized committee. This committee will work collaboratively with the National Elections Commission (NEC) and the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) to ensure that the reapportionment process is professionally executed and guided by accurate demographic data.

In a press statement issued in Monrovia, SEAL described the House’s action as part of Liberia’s long-standing democratic tradition of adjusting legislative representation in line with population changes. The organization recalled that since the drafting of the 1847 Constitution, proportional representation has been upheld as a core principle of Liberia’s democratic structure.

SEAL emphasized that the decision should not be misinterpreted as political reward for counties that supported the current administration. According to the group, the addition of new seats is rooted in constitutional requirements, population growth, and the need to ensure that all Liberians whether in heavily populated Montserrado or the smaller southeastern counties have equal representation in national governance.

The organization further encouraged citizens in smaller counties to fully participate in upcoming national censuses, noting that accurate population figures are crucial for achieving equitable representation. SEAL also urged local leaders to create economic opportunities capable of attracting internal migration and boosting regional development.

Reaffirming its commitment to inclusive governance, SEAL said it will continue advocating for policies that promote national unity, democratic integrity, and equal representation for all citizens.
